Vienna 1913 is Martin Martini’s first studio album in five years. Far from letting his voice slide in the interim, the record shows both his creativity and emboldened singing to their best advantage. Featuring songs originally commissioned by the National Gallery of Victoria and boasting an exceptional cast of musicians, including Darcy McNulty, Adrian Perger, Jules Pascoe, Ian Smith and master drummer Lyn Wallace, it is his most exciting album to date.  Vienna 1913 illuminates a new direction for Martini’s musical conception and lyricism, his approach to songwriting is unaffected and self-effacing, having maturing into a more subdued, though no less prophetic style.  Long time friend and collaborator, Darcy McNulty, also sings two songs on the record; '1913' and 'sleeping woman'.

The commission coincided with the NGV's Vienna Exhibitions, featuring a cross-section of Vienna's major modernists, from Schiele to Klimpt. Vienna 1913 developed out of his research and understanding of such artists, their lives and especially their psychological disquiet at themes of war and violence. The music itself reflects a contemporary perspective, taking old wisdom and applying it to a modern context. From the opening track Vienna, bursting out like a loose horse and carriage, to If the Car Was Never Invented, imploring the listener to get back to basics, and the twisted narrative of Big Brains to the soulful ballad of Egon Schiele, it crosses temporal and emotional boundaries with ease.

The record features an extensive booklet of original works by graphic illustrator Michael Camilleri.  In a style sympathetic to Martini's songwriting, he draws 'picture-stories', blending techniques from comics, picture books, film and fine art.  “He listened to the music and his drawings were so wonderful that, what started out as an album with some Camilleri up its sleeve, mushroomed into a book..” The combination of art and music, both drawing on the Viennese modernists for inspiration reveals a new, hybrid artwork - a collaboration of visual and philosophical themes, each exploring their unique frame of reference.
